SAN ANGELO, Texas: When Texas child welfare authorities removed every one of the more than 440 children at a polygamist sect’s ranch, they left behind one question after another for their parents.
Could the state remove infants, youngsters and teenage boys, even though the alleged abuse was limited to teenage girls?
Could all members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints lose their children for the underage marriages and sex the sect allegedly promoted, whether the parents followed that teaching or not?
Was the danger so imminent that it justified loading every child onto a bus at the ranch with a few clothes, sent first to a shelter and later to foster care? . . .
