Manama // Huda Azar Ibrahim Nono, a Jewish woman and a member of Bahrain’s upper house, has been appointed ambassador to an as yet undisclosed country, making her the first Jewish-Arab woman to hold such a ranking in any Gulf country.

Although Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s king, did not say to which country Ms Nono would be sent in announcing her appointment yesterday, it has been widely speculated she could go to the United States.

Bahrain is the only Gulf state with a Jewish minority, with some 40 Jews living on the tiny island of about half a million, down from 1,500 Jews prior to Israel’s establishment 60 years ago. . .
