History will record that John McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin as his running mate not only handicapped the Republican campaign but dealt a blow to the women’s movement.
At first blush it appeared Palin had scored one for women, becoming only the second female to be selected as a potential U.S. vice-president (Geraldine Ferraro was the first, in 1984).
In an August speech to Republicans, Palin drew attention to the fact the Obama Democrats had passed over Hillary Clinton in favour of Joe Biden. . .
